Here is a partial list of Design styles commonly discussed in residential design. Let these guide you in your search for inspiration with your upcoming project. This list is certainly not complete but offers a good starting point in the design process. It lays the groundwork for discussion, by offering some common terms that you can use to express the ideas and visions you desire in your home or office. (Notes on napkins or pages torn from the most recent industry magazine are welcome!) An interesting texture or wood species from a favorite restaurant or ski lodge can also help in selecting some of those materials you wish to incorporate into your space.
Do more with less. Use light and contrast with minimal furnishings. Floating shelves and basic colors are a common cabinet attribute.
Variation of common 18th and 19th century simplicity. This includes Shaker as well as Colonial cabinet designs. Durable yet simple. Open shelving. Red and white combinations are often seen here.
Minimal elements, high-tech components. Hidden flatscreens and USB ports would be included in this category. Cabinetry often reflects simple but fine lines. Trends lean towards darker painted cabinets such as deep blue or black.)
Mixes of creams, beiges and grey. Shaker style cabinets. Timeless
Whitewashed textures, blue/white/green colors, wicker furniture. Cabinets are typically white and countertop backsplashes veer towards glass mosaics.
A complete mix. An elaborate weave of multiple categories
Simple, light wood grains, big windows, plaid textures, glass panes in cabinets.
A Sun Valley staple…lots of visible timber, slate floors and reclaimed flooring are apparent throughout. Cabinets in the Rustic category tend to be rich with dark colors such as brown or burgundy.
Modern design from 1940’s-1970’s. Formica countertops, chrome hardware and flat cabinetry can be found in this category.
Borrows materials such as concrete countertops and steel beams as prominent fixtures throughout. Black, grey and/or dark blue work well in highlighting the square corners and crisp surfaces established within the cabinet design.
Think geometric forms, mirrors, and marble. Reminiscent of the 1920’s, flowing lines and elegant shapes.
Mixed prints of wallpaper and rugs as well as bright colors and high contrast. Large cabinet handles and brightly painted cabinets are the norm.
Bold colors, patterned textiles and clean lines. Floating shelves. Complimentary color schemes. Modern is basically whatever is popular throughout. Trendy.
Coziness. Fluffy textures. Chipped paint. Colors schemes range from white to cream to pink. Animal printed pillows and barstools are commonly assigned to this category.
Crystal Lighting, ornate columns, light and warm colors.
